Living with the Wolf!
Getting sufficient fresh produce to feed yourself ,or your family, can be a challenge ,when the 'wolf is at the door', has made himself at home in your home,or has completely blown the roof off your home. Produce is generally in short supply when it comes to food banks. Here are a few tips to help:
- Gleaning -Harvesting food that will Spoil
- Growing -The farm in your cupboard. - Our most successful and quickest crops have been sprouts grown from celery seed,.onions planted in a bit of soil rapidly grow green onion tops too.
- "Lettuce for your Invisible Rabbit." If you live in a larger centre, where you are relatively unknown, ask the grocer if you can have loose greens from the vegetable bins as if you would for your kids pet rabbit. If you would ask for the rabbit, how much more important are our kids.
- Eating "Wild"- If eating plants that grow wild,be very careful to pick them where they have not been expose to roadside fumes. There are many good first nations ,and herbalists cookbooks. Tip-if you have a yard cover dandelion plants,so they get less sun, they will not get as bitter.
- Coupons-Check recycling bins for coupons on cereal boxes Occasionally the cereal boxes will have coupons for free fresh fruit.
- Bartering -Trading Perhaps you have some skills you can trade - I have traded dog walking, babysitting, tutoring, and so on for Farm Fresh vegetables and fruit.
