Canadian Freebie Finders - Need Free Christmas Decorating Ideas? Try These!
Today, while waiting for the Handivan after grocery shopping, I noticed Christmas trees were selling for $25. How on earth I'd even be able to get one home if I had the money, I don't know. However, I also noticed scraps on the ground, and asked how much they were. -FREE!
Here are a few things we've done with our free gleanings to brighten our rooms.
Perhaps these ideas will brighten your home too.
To help keep branches longer, we crushed the pine twigs under water to remove air bubbles. We arranged the twigs in a vase, but a large jar would work well too. Can you guess what we tied the stems together with? Part of a Villagio Bread bag! We made "food for our arrangement by mixing Keep hot water with sugar and a spritz of lemon juice. You could substitute corn syrup for the sugar and asprin for the lemon juice if you have it. Top up the "food" daily. Our arrangement is in front of the electric fireplace that is part of our rented rooms, and on top of our flour tin- a reused popcorn container.

It's Beginning to Smell a lot Like Christmas!
These decorations use things we already use at home everyday. The key to decorating with free pine or spruce boughs in my mind is going rustic and using wood items with the boughs. What do you have around your home made of wood? Do you have wooden salad bowls, wooden spoons, a wooden cutting board?
Decorators on TV say to use odd numbers in arrangements. Here we stacked 3 wooden salad bowls, and put mandarin oranges stuck with Bay Leaves and a few of our gleanings in the bowl. We'll add homemade cookies to the lower two bowls. The mandarin oranges were .99 a dozen on the markdown rack. The book in the background was a castoff gifted to us.

Last week we got a great buy on a 10 lb bag of apples. A few sprigs of spruce or pine nestled in the apple basket make it feel like Christmas. A wicker basket would look lovely too. We took our Cinnamon sticks out of the cupboard and stood them along side in a plain glass.

When we ate one of our mandarin oranges, we discovered it was pretty dried out, so we're making the drier ones into pomanders by sticking them with whole cloves from the kitchen. In previous year's we've don this with oranges, but with mandarin oranges it is sooo much easier to poke the cloves into the peel.

We really wanted to have a little Christmas tree, so here's our mini tree. You can see it more fully decorated here on my personal blog. Can you guess what we made it out of? A wooden spoon with spruce sprigs tied on using clear plastic from a bread bag, standing in a pasta filled pasta sauce jar - I think it was a Classico. We tied a cookie cutter on and sprinkled dried Baby's Breath in the branches. Tip - use the smallest pasta you have to stand your wooden spoon in the jar.

We tied a bundle of sprigs together to make a swag. Can you guess what the ribbon is made from? Yup, part of a Villagio Bread bag! This swag is weather proof, and could be hung outdoors.

We're also going to use left-over needles to make fragrant sachets, and simmer some with cloves, bay leaves, orange peel and cinnamon.
What will you do with your free Pine or Spruce gleanings? We 'd love to see your pics!
Remember: Many places selling Christmas trees often give away the scraps and trimmings, but ask first.
